Four dead, 6 injured in car-van collision in Ramanathapuram

Four persons, including two children, were killed while six others were injured in a car-van collision near Kuyavankudi on the Madurai–Rameswaram highway on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Rajendran (52), Ambika (40), Thirukumaran (4) and Sairam (3), all residents of Krishnapuram Colony in Madurai. They were reportedly returning to Madurai after performing funeral rites in Rameswaram.

According to preliminary enquiries, the driver of the car they were travelling in overtook a vehicle before colliding head-on with the van, which was ferrying pilgrims to Rameswaram. While the two children died on the spot, the remaining two succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

The injured, who were rushed to Ramanathapuram Government Headquarters Hospital, were identified as Sithivinayagam (32), car driver, and his wife Ragasutha (26), Suresh (33), Ramya (28), Chandra (46) and Sadhanasri (6).

Ramanathapuram SP Omprakash Meena inspected the accident spot and held inquiries. Kenikarai police have filed a case in this connection, said sources.
