Women group seeks ban on liquor firms

According to Kalaiselvi, founding president, Tamil Nadu Swadeshi Women Protection Organisation, state government is giving permission to set up private liquor factories and procuring liquor from private liquor manufacturing factories. “The practice is banned under Section 5 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act of 1937,” she said.

She also said that after the death of the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa the policy of ban on liquor is set aside. “Former chief minister Jayalalithaa, in her 2016 electoral promises assured that the liquor ban would be implemented in a phased manner, but unfortunately after her death the assurance was kept aside,” said Kalaiselvi.

She further said that the state government which has to protect the people is running the liquor shop and it is highly condemnable. Due to liquor shops the crime rate is high and in many poor families people commit suicides.

“Due to liquor, children and elders are orphaned in many families. Many had lost their ability to work because of consuming liquor and are bedridden,” said Kalaiselvi.

The government must set up de-addiction centres to save many families from the menace of liquor and to reduce the crime rate in the society, she demanded.
