Dhinakaran, in a statement, said that the steep hike in property tax is another example of anti-people policy followed by the state government. “Due to the steep hike in property tax people are forced to pay more than 100 per cent more tax when compared to the previous tax structure,” he said.
He also said that the state government hiked the property tax for own properties by 50 per cent, for rented properties and commercial spaces by 100 per cent. However, as people protested the property tax was revised and the tax for rented property was fixed at 50 per cent, said Dhinakaran.
While calculating the property tax, the guidelines value has been taken into account and because of it, people had to face additional burden. “Under the new tax structure, maximum value of a property is taken into account and notices have been sent to people to pay tax under the revised structure,” said Dhinakaran.
This steep revision, though on the outset may look nominal but in reality, the property tax had been hiked by several percentage, he charged.
He also said that the state government should demand funds from the Centre for the local bodies. But it could not get the funds due to its failure to conduct local body elections. Already the state government had hiked the bus tickets by 60 per cent and now the property tax increase had added to the burden of the people in the state, said Dhinakaran.
He had also demanded the state government to immediately withdraw the increase in property tax.
