The Tamil Development Department’s move comes in the wake of a decision taken in the Assembly session on June 13. During the session, the House decided to replace names of local places, which were currently spelt in other languages, in Tamil.
The Collector asked the public to approach Tamil Development Department, either in person or through mail, with a list of names which they felt should be pronounced the same in Tamil and other languages.
Citing the example of Tiruvallikeni, which is called as Triplicane in English, he said, “however the name was changed to Tiruvallikeni to ensure that it had the same pronunciation in English too.”
Names submitted to the department would be reviewed by a committee headed by the Collector after which it would be forwarded to the Tamil Development Department in Chennai where the minister would take the final decision on the issue, he said.
