With forecast of inclement weather by over the next two days by weather officials and based on the damage caused by Cyclone Gaja in delta districts, the Vellore district administration has warned those living in low lying areas to move to safer areas, officials said on Wednesday.
Collector Raman after inspecting low lying areas, including Kansalpet, Thideernagar and Indranagar areas, along with Corporation Commissioner C Sivasubramaniam, informed that the district administration was fully equipped to handle any emergency and people should cooperate to ensure that there was no loss of lives either human or livestock.
During the visit, locals complained that chicken shops in nearby areas were regularly dumping waste into the Nicholson channel.
Due to the continued dumping, the channel was getting blocked frequently and the sewage inundated the houses in nearby low-lying areas.
Raman warned that if garbage dumping into Nicholson channel continues, strict action, including arrest and penalty, would be initiated against them.
Meanwhile, Vellore experienced mild showers throughout the day on Wednesday.
