2,000 mobile networks hit, to be restored within a week

Close to 2,000 mobile application programs related to 2G, 3G and 4G had been hit and it will take at least a week to restore the entire mobile network in cyclone hit districts, sources with telecom circle told DT Next.

According to a senior BSNL official, the mobile connectivity has improved by 75 per cent due to the restoration of power supply in urban areas, but in case of rural areas the connectivity is restored only by 50 per cent. Lack of electricity and diesel supply was an issue affecting the restoration works.

While the situation in Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur has improved, the tough geographic conditions in Kodaikanal is posing a hindrance for the telecom employees, the official added. “By and large our network has been restored sparring a few complaints and the BSNL staff are working round the clock to ensure mobile and internet connectivity,” S M Kalavathi, chief general manager, BSNL said.

According to BSNL sources in the delta region, 23 towers of the total 350 has completely collapsed and there are partially damaged towers. The issue is addressed by pressing mobile towers in Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam. Most of the towers are operated through diesel generators. The petrol outlets ensure adequate supply to BSNL and the situation is handled, sources added.

Meanwhile, industry sources estimated that the overall loss for the telecom sector based in TN would be around Rs 15 to 20 crores due to loss of business and towers.

As many as 30 private mobile towers including 16 micro towers had collapsed. “Airtel and Vodafone being major stakeholders in the delta have also suffered losses and this is the second time that the private telecoms are being hit.

Earlier, the mobile networks were suspended in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari due to the police shootout during the anti-Sterlite protests, now again because of Gaja, the business is affected,” a senior manager with a private telecom fumed.

In the case of Nagapattinam, private telecom players have reached out to the district administration seeking early restoration of power and diesel arrangements. In few villages the protestors deny access to the mobile towers to stock adequate diesel, the manager noted.
