1.6 lakh sheltered in relief camps in Tiruvarur
Around 1.58 lakh people affected by cyclone Gaja are staying at 199 relief camps in Tiruvarur district, said Food Minister R Kamaraj on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, he said power supply has been restored in 85 per cent areas in the four municipalities of Tiruvarur, Tiruthuraipoondi, Mannargudi and Koothanallur. However, only 25 per cent of the rural areas in the district have got electricity till now, he added.
As many as 7,695 workers are engaged in the restoration works in the district. Five ministers and six senior IAS officers are camping at the district to monitor the works. “747 medical camps have been organised in the district and 67,731 people have benefited as a result,” said.
Meanwhile, an electrician, identified as Venkatachalapathi (36), who volunteered to help Tangedco personnel in restoring power supply was electrocuted in Manapparai on Friday.
The incident happened when he was fixing a damaged electric pole. Venkatachalapathi, who came in contact with sudden transmission of power in the line, died of electrocution. Further investigations on the incident are on.
