L Murugan, vice chairman, NCSC said that a team from the organisation had met the bereaved family of Nandesh, a Dalit and consoled his parents in Madurai on Wednesday.

The young couple belonged to Hosur but, they were killed in Mandya district of Karnataka, recently.

Addressing a press meet, Murugan said seven persons, who had been identified as accused in connection with the killings, were arrested. The investigation agency should expedite the case like how it was done in the murder of Shankar, a Dalit, who married caste Hindu girl in Udumalpet.

Compensation would be given to the grief stricken family of Nandesh and government job would also be offered to his sister, who has studied SSLC. The NCSC would also keenly follow this case and more awareness should be created to prevent such incident, which is endangering human lives and maintain communal harmony to bring a change in society, he added.

Meanwhile, he said inter-caste marriages should be encouraged. “While governments of Haryana and Karnataka had been providing incentive of Rs 2.5 lakh on every inter-caste marriage, it was only Rs 50,000 in Tamil Nadu. The state should enhance such incentive, give adequate protection to inter caste couples and provide jobs to them,” he said.
