On Day 2, Tiruvarur residents try to block Purohit’s convoy

People in Tiruvarur district tried to block Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s convoy on Thursday to air their grievances in the wake of the cyclone, police said.

Since there was no supply of water and electricity, the people demanded an audience with the Governor by blocking his convoy, the police said.


After police intervened and extended an assurance that steps would be taken to redress their woes, the people dispersed.


 The Governor was here to inspect the relief work done by the state government.


Governor Purohit visited the areas affected by Cyclone Gaja in Tiruvarur and Thanjavur and met the people affected by the calamity and consoled them.


In Tiruvarur district, the Governor visited Tiruvarur, Mannargudi, Muthupettai, Thiruthuraipoondi, Villakudi village, Kottur Panchayat Union, Cheri, Karuvankulam, Thalanthurvasal and Kallappiyal areas and saw for himself the damaged houses, trees, electric poles and transformers.


After inspecting the installation of an electric high tension tower, he praised the electricity department staff for their work. After consoling the people whose houses were damaged, he also spent about 30 minutes in inspecting 150 houses which were fully or partially damaged in Kottur village and met those housed in the relief camps. 


He then met the people who were staying in the camps at Thiruthuraipoondi and heard their grievances.


From Tiruvarur, Purohit visited Thanjavur and several areas affected by the Cyclone, met those housed in relief camps and consoled them.
