Left with no other option and not wanting the nuts to go waste, they have made this appeal. It would also help them to clear the land of damaged logs, thus saving a huge expenditure for them.

According to V Subramanian, a coconut farmer from Thillangadu near Andikadu in Pattukkottai, Thanjavur district, “We have been pushed to 1980s, the time when we started coconut farming after paddy failed due to drought condition. It is time we have to restore the soil of our region. For this, the broken trees and the scattered coconuts must be removed. Only after the removal of the logs and nuts, we can think of an alternative.”

Subramanian has also circulated an emotional appeal through the social media, stating that they can think the next course of action only after the soil was restored back to the original condition. “All the lands across Peravurani, Pattukkottai, Oranthanadu and adjacent villages have been blanketed by broken and uprooted trees and scattered coconuts, both mature and tender. Please to our farms and take away these coconuts and use them so that we will be content that our sweat has not been wasted,” Subramanian added.

It is said that 10-year-old coconut trees were good for centring works and those which were 20-year-old would be strong enough to make pillars for farms.

“If you take these mature trees and cut into desired pieces and preserve them, they can be even used for more than 10 years even,” adds Subramanian.

Farmers added that if visitors from other places and district cleared the logs and nuts by taking them away, it could save several lakh rupees for them.

“We cannot ask for Rs 1,000 from fellow farmers, as they are also. We have borrowed money from many people promising to repay after getting the yield. But everything has been destroyed and we cannot borrow money further for clearing the land. So those who want the tree logs and coconuts can come and take them,” he said.

They pleaded the people to come and collect it within 30 days, otherwise, everything would decay.
