Kamal, who has criticised the state government’s efforts on Cyclone Gaja after having visited the areas affected by it and interacting with the people, is now consulting with specialists to figure out what is the best course of action to help the affected and ensure how such large-scale destructions can be avoided in the future.
Kamal toured the Delta districts, worst affected by Cyclone Gaja and interacted with people who have been displaced by the calamity. He said that the relief camps where those whose homes have been destroyed have been accommodated are too cramped. The camps held over a hundred people and facilities were found wanting.
On seeing the camps and speaking to the people, Kamal said that he had realised that the preparation efforts by the state government for the cyclone and the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken are both inadequate to meet the needs of the people.
Kamal spoke to people along his route and heard from citizens who had lost homes, businesses and all their belongings. The 64-year-old said that the Prime Minister and other Ministers must visit the areas to understand the needs of the people. He added that despite the hardships faced by them and a bleak future filled with uncertainty, the people had welcomed him with warmth and had not lost their sense of humanity. The MNM president also conveyed his admiration for frontline workers of the Tangedco.
