College postpones meet after Minister’s tweet

The Tamil Department of St Joseph’s College, Tiruchy, postponed an international conference after Minister for Tamil Culture K Pandiarajan’s intervention. The Minister reacted following protest by Hindu outfits led by BJP leader H Raja, who claimed that the conference discussed the derogatory references against women.

The Minister reacted following protest by Hindu outfits led by BJP leader H Raja, who claimed that the conference discussed the derogatory references against women.

St Joseph’s College scheduled an international conference tagged as ‘Harassment of Women in Tamil Literature’ from December 6 and 7 and invited research papers from the scholars under various topics. However, soon after the invite wasmade public, the BJP national secretary H Raja tweeted by claiming that this conference was planned by Christian missionaries and Urban Naxals to incite communal unrest and planned to demean the women and also claimed that the event will bring disrepute to works of Tamil and Hindu Vedic literature.


Raja called for the event to be banned to which the Minister assured that it would not take place.Meanwhile, the college on Saturday postponed the conference citing that they were undertaking the rehabilitation works in the Cyclone Gaja-hit districts.
