Kanniyakumari Railway users seek app-based taxi facility

To provide a long-term solution for passengers, Kanniyakumari District Rail Users Association on Tuesday sought the intervention of railway authorities to introduce an ‘app-based taxi facility’ at Nagercoil railway junction and in all other major stations in the district.

P Edward Jeni, secretary of the association, said, “A large number of rail passengers are using the Nagercoil junction and other stations like Nagercoil Town and Kuzhithurai. But they are being fleeced by auto rickshaw and taxi drivers. Hence, the railways should put an end to this menace by introducing the app-based taxi facility.”

Pointing out that most of the railway stations in the district were located far away from the town, he said that the passengers had no alternative other than depending on autos and taxis, which fleece the public, in the absence of a systematic transport facility.

“It has been a practice among these drivers to swindle money from passengers as they had no other alternative. If the ‘app-based taxi facility’ is introduced with fixed fare for rail commuters, it can put an end to the problem,” said Edward.

He further added, “While the railway authorities have been spending funds on modernisation of the stations, they can think about introducing this facility in the district, which can be a model to other districts.”

“Though Kanniyakumari is the smallest district in the southern region of Tamil Nadu, it has the highest population density, next to Chennai. Moreover, Kanniyakumari is the second most urbanised district in Tamil Nadu with high literacy rate,” Edward stressed.
