There is a lot to explore in the backwaters of Pichavaram, a year-round destination for adventure seekers. However, during the summer season, the humidity level rises and make the atmosphere hot and humid. Hence, it is not a preferable choice during the summers. The best time to visit Pichavaram is from September until the end of February.


Spread across 1,100 hectares over several islands, the mangrove forest of Pichavaram is considered to be the second largest in the world. You can go for boating at the backwaters. And if you are lucky, you could also spot various species of birds like pelicans, spoonbills, snipes and storks. Apart from boating, the other activities which can be done include kayaking, fishing, canoeing. You can either board a bus to Chidambaram or Puducherry from where you can take another bus to Pichavaram.
