The expose has come as a shock to the local health officials. “We trapped them using a decoy. After sealing their premises, we searched for Anandi’s cell phone and found that nearly 25 other women have fixed appointments with her,” said Collector KS Kandasamy.
“After Anandi was arrested, cops started drilling Sivakumar and asked him to demonstrate how he used pick up the clients. We followed him, when he was on the way to pick up five more patients.Shockingly, one of the clients was the wife of a Chartered Accountant,” Kandasamy added.
“Anandi, a school dropout, worked with a gynaecologist for around 10 years and that is where she learnt the procedures. She used the procedure for the sex determination tests. The real money spinner was the sex determination test that costed around Rs 6,000 per case. Of the total amount, Rs 2,000 was given as commission to auto driver Sivakumar. To conduct abortions, she charged Rs 35,000 per case,” he added.
Her husband Tamilselvan had taken long leave from work to help his wife in these activities, officials said. “The ploy was simple. No one can approach Anandi directly. The cases were routed through Sivakumar,” Kandasamy averred. “Sivakumar also checked and confirmed particulars given by the clients to ensure that they were genuine,” he added.
Kandasamy said, the portable scanner used by Anandi was procured in the name of Madras Medical Mission. “Each scanner has a registration number and after using them for a specific period of time all of them were replaced. However, the old machine through second hand dealers were repaired and given to other institutions,” he added.
