2 workers die after taking spurious liquor

Two persons died after consuming spurious liquor, which was sold in a petty shop at Pallapatti village in Dindigul district on Wednesday. One more person is battling for life in hospital.

According to sources, seven persons consumed the spurious liquor sold by the petty shop. Three persons, who fainted soon after consuming the drink, were rushed to the Vadipatti Government Hospital.


However, R Murugan (50) of Goundampatti village, Nilakottai block and Sairam of Bharathipuram died without responding to the treatment. S Thangapandi (52) of Panchalankurichi, whose condition turned worse, was referred to Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). All the three victims were farm labourers.


KP Shanmuga Rajeswaran, Inspector General of Police (South Zone), along with R Sakthivel, Dindigul Superintendent of Police inspected the spot and held inquiries. Later talking to newsmen, the Zone IG said, “Jayachandran, a local resident, is the key accused. He used to buy liquor from the Tasmac outlet and sell them through the petty shop. Around 70 liquor bottles and several empty containers have been recovered from the petty shop. Totally, 15 persons, including Jayachandran, have been picked up for interrogation.”


S Shanmugasundaram, Dean (in-charge) of GRH, Madurai, said the condition of Thangapandi was stable after treatment.


Samples lifted from the shop have been sent to the lab for test. Ammaiyanaickanoor police have filed a case under Section 174 of Cr.P.C and investigating, sources said.
