Bid to rob ATM cash fails in Tiruvannamalai town

Police have launched a search for a lungi-clad man, who attempted to break open and rob cash from a State Bank ATM, which had three machines, in Tiruvannamalai during the wee hours of Friday.

According to officials, the failed attempt came to light when customers, who came to retrieve and deposit cash in the machines at the ATM located on bank branch premises on Big Street. They found one of the machines damaged. On being alerted by customers, officials informed the town police, who rushed to the spot and conducted preliminary investigations. 

The CCTV footage at the bank showed a lungi clad man entering the ATM at 3.30 am on Friday. According to police, he picked up a crowbar, which was there near a generator, and tried to pry open the machines. 

However, he could not break open them even after repeated attempts for nearly one hour. So, he abandoned his plan and left the place.

SBI officials after inspecting the ATM kiosk, a total cash of Rs 50,000 in the three machines remained was safe.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.
