For the first time, the PWD commenced the deepening works in Madambakkam tank to augment the storage capacity last month. This was implemented as part of the Comprehensive Flood Mitigation Plan with Conservation, Climate Adaptive Remodeling Tanks and Flood Protection Works, which was evolved for Kancheepuram district.
As per officials, earth was to be excavated up to a depth of 3 feet while the locals claim over 6 feet was being excavated. “It was being carried out along with the digging of wells in the lake bed. We are suspicious about the activities regarding the filching of excavated earth. However, we are happy with the deepening works. This is the only source for recharging the groundwater system,” said R Sundar, a Madambakkam Panchayat resident.
The continuous removal of sand has led to the formation of huge craters, said sources. The deepening of the tank was being carried out to reap various benefits, such as increase the storage capacity and groundwater potential with accelerated recharging, adding flood buffering potential of the tank, and generating revenue.
“The earth excavated will be used for strengthening the tank and the rest was sold to the public as per law,” said a PWD official.
The office of the Assistant Director of Mines, Kancheepuram and the Collector have approved the proposal to carry out the deepening project under the TN Minor Mineral Concession rules, 1959. The works are expected to be completed before this month end.
