Leader of Opposition MK Stalin has demanded vigilance and anti-corruption (VAC) department to immediately initiate action against Local Administration Minister SP Velumani and officials of Corporation of Chennai (CoC), mainly its vigilance officials in the Rs 740 crore tender scam in the civic body.
Expressing shock at Minister Velumani allegedly engaging in corruption in the city corporation even while a corruption case was pending before the Madras High Court, Stalin cautioned that he would move the Madras High Court if the VAC remains mute spectator to the corruption in provision of civic amenities to the city people.
Alleging that a syndicate has been formed among contractors to win the bids floated by the city corporation, Stalin said the price quoted by the contractors was 30-50 per cent higher than the schedule of rates fixed by the CoC. Claiming that bitumen and ready-mix concrete were overpriced by 100 and 50 per cent respectively, the DMK president said the notice period of tender was halved to 15 days only to support corruption and in some cases husband and wife had tabled separate bids to win the contract.
The DVAC, which trumpets that it has filed many cases in Edappadi K Palaniswami regime, has not acted on the complaint lodged by Arappor Iyakkam in the scam, and that too even after cancellation of the tenders were reported by the media, the LoP said, adding that action was not initiated on the Minister despite him repeatedly awarding tender to his relatives.
Accusing the city corporation commissioner of helping the Minister to cover up the corruption, Stalin said the cancellation of just Rs 57 crore worth tenders on flimsy grounds raises questions about the alleged partnership between the Minister and Corporation Commissioner in the scam.
DMK president seconds online petition seeking JPC on Rafale deal
Chennai: Upping his ante against the ruling BJP, DMK president MK Stalin on Thursday supported an online petition demanding JPC (joint parliamentary committee) probe into the Rafale jet scam. “The #RafaleScam is a classic case of corruption & compromise of our national security,” Stalin said endorsing the petition moved on Change.org. “I support this petition http://chng.it/FzLJFC2r via @ChangeOrg_India.
It is critical that a thorough probe is done & the investigations are handed over to a Joint Parliamentary Committee,” Stalin posted on Twitter. The petition demanding the government to order JPC to investigate the Rafale deal was moved by one Raja Kochar, who has claimed to be a decorated officer of Indian Army, who had served the defence force in prestigious appointments over 37 years. “The cancellation of the 126 aircraft order, 108 of which would have been manufactured at the HAL, with technology transferred to it, has irreparably damaged the HAL. The only beneficiaries of the destruction of this valuable public sector enterprise (PSU) are foreign aircraft manufacturers and private Indian companies like Reliance defence,” the online petition said.
