8 fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Eight Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy near Neduntheevu for allegedly fishing in the island nation’s waters, an official said here on Monday.

The fishermen on board a country boat had ventured into sea from Jegathapattinam coast in Pudukkottai district.


The fishermen have been lodged at a camp in Karainagar in Sri Lanka.


According to Regional Deputy Director of Fisheries, E. Kathavarayan, seven of the arrested men belonged to Ramanathapuram district while the remaining person was from Pudukkottai district.


Those detained have been identified as Venkadaselvapathy Piragashmoorthy (29), Arokiya Milton (40), Sinnarajah Ramesh (55), Annasamy Anthony, Senthi Stephen (38), Thashan (38) and Muthu Sundaram (50) and Abdul (30), sources said


On December 11, over 3,000 fishermen from the state were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan navy personnel when they were fishing near Katchatheevu.
