Even as Pon Manickavel, who was posted as special officer by the Madras High Court on November 30 — the day he retired as Inspector General of Police — initiated the process of sending off nearly 60 policemen, including 14 sub-inspectors, from his unit to their parent organisation with request for equal number of young and fresh police personnel, a group of police officials from the same wing has approached the DGP TK Rajendran seeking transfer from the unit.
These officers charged Pon Manickavel of misusing the law and forcing the police personnel to file cases without proper evidence. The group alleged that Pon Manickavel had been threatening the police officers who refused to execute his orders.
A press statement from the DGP office assured proper investigation into the petition against the retired IG. The statement said an Additional Superintendent of Police, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, four inspectors, six sub inspectors and a head constable, who were posted in the Idol Wing, met DGP T K Rajendran at his office on Tuesday and handed over the complaint their complaint against the Idol Wing chief.
Meanwhile, Pon Manickavel issued orders of transfer to 14 sub inspectors and 46 other police personnel, directing them to return to their units. They were repatriated as their one year tenure with the Idol Wing was over.
In the repatriation letter, Pon Manickavel has also sought suitable substitutes for sub inspectors and other police personnel who are being send off. In the communication, the officer noted that he wanted directly recruited SI, who are aged below 40. Similarly, he had asked for grade II constables below the age of 30, grade II constables below the age of 35, head constable below the age of 40 and special sub inspectors below the age of 50.
