9 flying squads, 6 static surveillance teams formed for by-election

Nine flying squads and six static surveillance teams have been formed to keep an eye on any violations in Tiruvarur assembly segment, District Collector and Electoral Officer L Nirmal Raj said on Wednesday.

Addressing newspersons, Nirmal Raj said the Tiruvarur RDO would be the Returning Officer, while the PA to the RDO and Tiruvarur Tahsildhar would be the assistant ROs. 

As on January 1, 2019, there are 2.63 lakh voters, including 1.34 lakh women in the constituency. As many as 303 polling booths have been set up in 158 polling stations. “Since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into force, the Election Commission has directed us to initiate action against candidates or political parties found violating the code. In order to ensure a free and fair elections, the district election office has formed as many as nine flying squads and six static surveillance teams who would be on the rounds across the assembly segment,” Nirmal Raj said.

A control room has been established and the public can contact 18004257035 for any queries and complaints, said the Collector. 

He later conducted a meeting with the representatives of all political parties and briefed them about the MCC. He instructed them not to distribute any food items to those staying in the cyclone relief camps. He also asked the political parties to get a pass for the vehicles they have planned to utilise during the election campaign. District Superintendent of Police Durai and other government officials were present during the meeting.
