According to police sources, Sethupathy (35) and Chinnadurai (40) were setting up explosives at the quarry, owned by one Velu (60) from Thottivayal in Pudukkottai.
“The two men were breaking rocks to place the explosives, when they inadvertently set off an already-placed explosive. The two of them were thrown in the impact and sustained severe injuries,” the source said.
A few other workers from the quarry rushed Sethupathy and Chinnadurai to the Pudukkottai Government Medical College and Hospital.
Sethupathy was pronounced dead on arrival, while Chinnadurai was shifted to Thanjavur after preliminary treatment. Police said that Chinnadurai is expected to recover soon.
