Police said S Mumthasar (20) of Avaniyapuram in Aduthurai near Kumbakonam was a second year BE mechanical engineering student at a private college in Mayiladuthurai and he was living with his mother Mumtaj Begum. His father Sahul Hameed is working in Dubai.
According to sources, Mumthasar went to his sister’s house in Tirumangalakudi on his bike on Friday evening and later he called his mother and informed that he was going to Tiruvidaimarudur to attend his friend’s birthday party.
When Mumtaj Begum called him at around 8.15 pm, an unidentified person reportedly attended the call and told her that they have kidnapped Mumthasar. Police said the kidnapper also demanded Rs 5 lakh as ransom to release Mumthasar. They told her that he was being taken to Coimbatore and warned her against approaching the police. They threatened to kill her son if she did not oblige.
However, Mumtaj Begum decided to inform the police based on the advice of her brother Naseer Muhammed, former panchayat union President of Avaniyapuram. They lodged a complaint at the Tiruvidaimarudur police station.
Meanwhile, Mumthasar was found dead on the banks of Veerachozhan river at Tirubuvanam on Saturday morning. His throat was found slit open.
On information, Superintendent of Police T Senthilkumar visited the spot and held inquiries. The police are investigating whether he was murdered for ransom or if there is any other motive.
The Tiruvidaimarudur police have detained four persons for interrogation in connection with this case. They are also searching for the two-wheeler on which he left the house.
