According to the police, the incident took place around 11.30 am when R Arjun (22) and S Wilfred (31), both employees of Kalyan Jewellers in Thrissur, were heading to Coimbatore from Kerala with the jewels to be delivered in its shop located on the 100-feet Road.
“They were coming by a Mahindra Xylo vehicle. While nearing Navakarai on TN-Kerala border, the gang, who were trailing them in two cars, rammed into their car. Arjun and Wilfred were threatened and forced out of their vehicle. The gang then drove away the car which contained the jewels,” police said.
On receiving information, the KG Chavady police rushed to the spot and held enquiries. Police suspect that the gang might have escaped to Kerala through a different route. Addressing newspersons, Coimbatore rural SP R Pandiarajan said four special teams have been formed to nab the culprits and recover the stolen jewels. “The CCTV cameras fixed in the petrol bunk located nearby and other buildings are being examined to trace the identity of culprits. They will be nabbed soon,” he said.
Police are also looking into the possibility of Kalyan staff behind the incident.
Meanwhile, a release from Kalyan Jewellers stated that jewels valued at Rs 98.05 lakh were being transported with all required documents.
“A complaint has been lodged with the police in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Steps have also been taken to lodge a claim with the insurance company,” said the release.
