Addressing a press conference here, Anbazhagan said the government has the responsibility to provide the maximum assistance to the people who voted them to power and to ensure the development of the UT.

“However, both the government and the Lt Governor are trying to deceive the people,” he said.

On the issue of  Pongal gift, Anbazhagan said that it is a practice since long to provide Pongal gift to the people and the government has to spend only Rs 135 per ration card.

However, the Lt Governor has given permission to provide the gift only to BPL card holders and the people are being ‘cheated’ on this issue too, he said.

Pointing out that the Tamil Nadu government is providing gift worth Rs 400 each to 1.90 crore ration card holders, Anbazhagan said the Madras High Court has not stayed the provision of the gift and ruled that the Rs 1,000 in cash be provided only to BPL families.

He said the Lt Governor has twisted the High Court ruling and said that it would be applicable in Puducherry also.

When the High Court allowed the provision of Pongal gift to all ration card holders in Tamil Nadu, the Lt Governor stating that the Pongal gift would be provided only to BPL families amounts to contempt of court.

Hence, the High Court on its own should take up the issue suo motu and register a contempt of court case against Bedi, he added.

Anbazhagan also claimed that Chief minister V Narayanasamy is not concerned about the issue, adding that he has not yet convened a Cabinet meeting.
