According to sources, the valuables were stolen from the locked house at Kamarajapuram in Madurai. The incident came to light when M Thangavelu (72) returned home after his usual early morning walk. He found the front door of the house broken and the valuables kept inside a almirah missing.
Keerathurai police registered a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC on Saturday evening, after Thangavelu lodged a complaint with them.
Sources said police have formed special teams to nab those behind the incident. While the cops held inquires with neighbours, finger print experts examined the spot. A sniffer dog was also pressed into service.
Source said three bundles of Rs 2,000 notes and four bundles of Rs 500 notes were found missing from the almirah. Thangavelu used to rent out his 22 houses, besides lending money on interest.
Stating that house break-ins are a rare occurrence in the locality, the source said the police were combing through the footage of two CCTV cameras installed nearby.
