The deceased were identified as Jothimani (57), her father Nachimuthu (80) and her grandson Selvamithran (3), said police.
Nachimuthu, Jothimani and her husband Muthusamy (62), a retired TNSTC bus driver from Netaji Nagar in Dharapuram, had visited their daughter’s house in Udumalpet for Pongal. On Wednesday night, the trio was returning to Dharapuram, accompanied by the couple’s grandson.
Near Kondarasampalayam on the Dharapuram-Udumalpet road, Muthusamy, who was at the wheel of the car, lost control of the vehicle and rammed it into a tree.
In the impact of the accident, Jothimani and her father Nachimuthu died on the spot. A passer-by admitted three-year-old Selvamithran at Dharapuram government hospital. However, the three-year-old succumbed to his injuries without responding to treatment.
A severely injured Muthusamy has been admitted in a critical condition at a private hospital in Coimbatore.
Dharapuram police has sent the bodies of the deceased for post-mortem at Dharapuram government hospital. A case has been registered in this connection and further enquiry is on.
