Tension prevailed outside the Anna University campus on Friday as hundreds of protesting students staged a demonstration demanding the authorities to abolish the choice-based credit system (CBCS) as per the 2017 exam regulation.
University staff, including lecturers and professors who came for the duty in the morning, were bewildered after seeing over 200 students from various colleges affiliated to the university shouting slogans near the main gate.
The protesting students demanded that the university should immediately withdraw the choice-based credit system as per the 2017 exam regulation, since they could not complete the degree in stipulated time if they keep arrears due to the new rule. The students also claimed that it takes over one year to appear for the arrears exams.
According to the new regulation, if a student fails to secure a pass in a theory course, the candidate should do reappearance registration only along with regular students for that course in the subsequent semester, when offered next, earn continuous assessment marks and attend the end semester examination.
When the student protest went out of control, Anna University Registrar Dr J Kumar met the agitating students and pacified them saying that their demand will be looked into. He told the students that their demand will be decided by a committee and not by a single person.
Later, Kumar told reporters that the students’ demand will be taken to the Vice Chancellor and other authorities concerned before taking a decision.
He also pointed out that the new regulation was constituted only for the benefit of the students. A decision regarding their demands will be taken within 10 days, he added.
