Addressing newspersons, Vice-Chancellor M K Surappa said it was the University Grants Commission (UGC) that introduced the regulations and therefore no changes could be made in them.

Stating that he would definitely address the genuine concern of the students, he said: “However, I cannot recommend lowering the quality of examination.”

He also said only a few colleges, which have a shortage of faculty, have complained in this regard. “Most of the colleges affiliated the university want to continue with the existing regulations”, he said.

It may be noted that around 200 students from a few colleges affiliated to the university had staged a demonstration a few days ago, demanding to abolish the new examination pattern. The students said they must wait one year to write arrear exams as per the new regulations.

Meanwhile, the principal opposition party DMK has urged the State government to repeal the credit system followed by the engineering colleges affiliated to the university.
