No oil or gas content behind bubbles in farm well: Experts

Anxiety and confusion prevailed at Peravurani in Thanjavur on Friday after bubbles started emerging continuously in a farm well.

This brought a team of experts from the ONGC to the spot for an inspection of the well. A thorough check finally put to rest speculations about oil or gas presence in the well by residents. However, the experts keen to find the exact cause for the bubbles in the well have decided to empty the well and conduct advanced tests.


According to sources, Singaram, a farmer from Valabrammankadu village near Peravurani has a 40-foot bore well to feed his farm. While his well had water, those in the nearby places were nearly dry.


Surprisingly, for the past one month, the well was emitting bubbles. People, who visited the well and drank the water, claimed that it tasted normal.


As the news about the well reached the district officials, Collector Annadurai on Thursday asked the Peravurani Tahsildhar Baskaran, fire and rescue personnel and other revenue officials to conduct an inspection. The Collector also asked the ONGC experts and geologists to inspect the well.


Following this, a team of experts from the ONGC inspected the well with advanced gadgets. After inspection, the experts allayed the fears of the people and ruled out the theory of oil or gas content in the well. “We have planned to empty the well and conduct detailed tests to find out the exact reason for the bubbles. The work will start in a couple of days,” he assured.
