The decision to join the stir was taken unanimously at a meting held in the Secretariat on Monday. Members of all the six associations will not report to work on Wednesday. Another meeting will be held on Thursday to decide on the further course of action.

“The government will now be forced to call us for talks as it cannot let the official machinery to be crippled,” an employee said.

It was only recently that the members of three government recognised associations met Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and assured to her that they will not join the protests. However, they opted to not honour the assurance at the meeting held on Monday.

Govt must hold talks immediately: VCK leader

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Monday condemned the State government for arresting and abusing the government staff and teachers.

In a statement, he said: “The protesters have genuine demands. The government should stop arresting them and instead hold talks with the representatives of the protesting associations to end the strike.”

Thirumavalavan said work in government offices have been affected and schools are not able to function properly due to the protests. “The government should stop issuing advertisements which carry warnings to the protesters,” he added.
