Woman killed, 60 injured in bus mishap

One person was killed and nearly 60 others were injured when a private bus in which they were travelling rammed a tree after hitting a tractor near Ambur on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Govindammal, wife of Jayaraman of Masigam village near Pernambut.


The accident occurred when the bus driven by Sivanesan (52) was on its way to Ambur from Pernambut. The driver lost control of the vehicle when it was crossing Meachampattu. It first hit a tractor coming in the opposite direction and then came to a stopon ramming a tree. The crash resulted in injuries to nearly 60 persons, including 25 women.


As the bus ferry workers to leather companies in the area it was overcrowded, said officials. On receipt of information, Umarabad police rushed to the spot and with the aid of the local public retrieved the passengers from the vehicle.


While 15 injured were admittedto the Primary Health Centre at Nariampattu, 39 others wereadmitted to the Ambur Government Hospital. Six passengers, who were seriously injured, were rushed to the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital. One among them Govindammal succumbed to injuries after admission.


Umarabad police registered a case and began investigations.
