Grant financial help to Gaja victims: Fishers

Fishermen from the central region sought a welfare board and demanded immediate disbursal of Rs 25,000 each as welfare assistance to those affected by Cyclone Gaja.

Led by Tiruvarur district president N K Marimuthu, they met on Tuesday and passed a series of resolutions, including one demanding an interim relief fund during the fishing ban period, as the fishermen are not able to do any other work. They pointed out that the fishermen in the district, affected by Cyclone Gaja, are presently unemployed.


They lauded the union government’s budget announcement of separate fisheries ministry, demanded a welfare board to safe guard the livelihood of the fishermen.


They also demanded to help them a financial assistance of Rs 25,000 each to the Gaja-affected fishermen for alternate employment, priceless fishing nets and boxes, relief fund for the inland fishermen who lost their fishing ponds in the cyclone.
