Ramadoss, in a statement, said, “The High Court had suggested the state government to convene the grama sabhas and to vote on the presence of liquor shops in their villages. If the grama sabha votes to remove the liquor shops the shops have to be removed.”

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, on Wednesday, gave few suggestions to the state government to shutdown the liquor shops. One of the key suggestions is to take a decision in the grama sabha.

“If 25 per cent of women in a village submit a petition to shut down the liquor shop in their village, grama sabha had to meet and voting had to be conducted.

If majority of people vote against the liquor shop, government has to close the shop concerned,” said Ramadoss.

He also said that it is a myth that liquor is a revenue source for government and the PMK had debunked the myth on several occasions.

“If government gets Rs 100 revenue from liquor it has to spend Rs 180 to fight against the ill-effects caused by liquor,” he noted.
