Police said that the deceased was identified as Ramesh (32), a daily wage earner of Ethuvampadi village. Ramesh was married to Geetha (28) and the couple had two children. In recent times, Ramesh frequently quarreled with Geetha suspecting her fidelity.
On Thursday night, when Geetha returned home late, Ramesh again picked up an altercation with her over the same issue. Angered by this, Ramesh on Friday morning left the house and climbed a 100-foot abandoned HT transmission tower near Nelvaypalayam and threatened to commit suicide.
Locals, who spotted Ramesh on top of the tower, informed his wife and the Kalambur police station. Following this, police rushed to the spot and tried to convince and bring him down. As the efforts failed, police informed the Fire and Rescue Services Department. A team of fire service personnel, who arrived at the spot, spread out nets to save Ramesh, if he jumped from the tower.
Meanwhile, DSP Senthil came to the spot and spoke to Ramesh over mobile phone and asked him to come down. While talking, Ramesh suddenly slipped from the tower and his head hit on a protruding beam. Ramesh died on the spot.
Police rushed the body to Arni Government Hospital for post-mortem. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
