A TNSTC bus was impounded at Vellore for failing to pay the compensation dues as ordered by the court, on Wednesday.
Officials said that Amjad (50), a labourer, suffered fractures on both his legs on October 23, 2012, after the two-wheeler he was riding was knocked down by a Gudiyattam-bound government bus from Vellore.
After the mishap, Amjad moved to the Vellore court for compensation. The court awarded him a compensation of Rs 4.67 lakh in 2017. As the corporation failed to pay the amount, Amjad moved another petition in the court.
In the appeal, the court allowed him to impound a TNSTC bus if the corporation failed to pay up the amount within four months from the date of the order. By this time, the original compensation with interest increased to Rs 7.13 lakh.
As the corporation did not pay the compensation till Tuesday, Amjad along with court officials reached Vellore new bus stand and impounded a Gudiyattam- bound TNSTC bus and the vehicle was then taken to the court campus.
It may be recalled that a month ago, in a similar case in Tiruvannamalai, a government bus of the Salem depot was impounded and taken to the district court.
When asked, TNSTC officials pleaded helplessness to pay the compensation as funds available with the corporation was enough only to disburse salaries and fuel bills.
