Earlier, Murugan sought to stage a protest fast on February 2, but was later persuaded by jail officials to give it up. However, jail officials denied that Murugan had staged a hunger strike on that day.
Subsequently, he gave a letter on Thursday seeking permission to undertake the protest. After he began his fast, efforts of jail staff to convince him to give it up proved futile on Saturday. Meanwhile, Nalini also began her hunger strike in the women’s wing in support of her husband’s agitation after handing over a letter to this effect to Andal, jail superintendent in-charge. The duo has undertaken the protest claiming that though a resolution seeking the release of the seven convicted prisoners in the assassination case was passed by the Assembly and was forwarded to the Governor, no action has been taken so far.
