Speaking on the sidelines of the Road Safety Awareness week programme held in Karur, the Minister said the government is committed to reduce accidents by at least 50 per cent in the State by 2020.
In an attempt to crackdown on those violating road rules, the Transport Department has decided to install censor cameras on the entire stretch between Chengalpattu and Tiruchy.
“The cameras would help to identify the violating vehicles and fines would be levied on the drivers. A fund of Rs 25 crore has been allotted for the purpose,” Vijayabaskar said.
The Minister said the road safety week has been organised by the Transport Department in association with the School Education Department to ensure an accident-free Tamil Nadu.
“Tamil Nadu is the first state to sign up for the C-40 buses. A special team from Germany inspected all our buses and workshops and expressed their satisfaction. As many as 2,000 battery operated buses and 12,000 BS-6 variant buses that are safer for the environment will be procured through funding by KFW, a Germany based agency. Agreements for the same are being prepared,” said the Minister.
Vijayabaskar also said the High Court will be approached seeking reliefover the ban imposed on rooster fights, which is famous in Karur.
“Arrangements are being made by the district administration to organise the rooster fight. The event has been scheduled during February 16-18,” he added.
