The issue surfaced in the early hours on Monday when residents of Naickaneri village near Ambur, found out that Kulandai (56), a resident of the village and his daughter Saroja, were involved in illicit liquor distillation.

Recently the information reached the villagers and they got enraged since the entire village took a vow before the Ambur taluk police that they would not either distill or consume illicit liquor during the Pongal celebration.

The villagers also repeatedly advised Kulandai and his daughter to refrain from distillation activities. Since the duo continued to distil liquor, a group of furious villagers on Monday morning ‘raided’ Kulandai’s house. They broke some of the household articles from Kulandai’s home and later tied him to a tree. After thrashing him, they also found 1,000 litres of hooch hidden inside lorry tubes in Kulandai’s home.

Immediately, villagers informed the Ambur taluk police who rushed to the spot and took Kulandai into their custody. After interrogation, police arrested both Kulandai and Saroja. Police took the duo to the police station after destroying the illicit hooch found in tubes. Investigations are still continuing.
