The accident recorded on CCTV camera shows a speeding car ramming a biker identified as Balaji (22), a native of Thanjavur, on Codissia Road on Wednesday evening. Police said Balaji is a final year engineering student.

Balaji took a left turn and stopped for a brief moment, apparently shocked by seeing the speeding car coming from the opposite direction. After the car rammed his two-wheeler, he was tossed in the air. However, the car sped away without stopping to rescue the victim.

Passersby, who witnessed the accident, rushed Balaji to a private hospital and he is undergoing treatment with severe injuries.

After the footage of the accident went viral, the police tracked the registration number of the car and nabbed R Darshana Ruth (21) from Kurichi Housing Unit. Police said she was behind the wheels at the time of the accident. Inquiries are on to find if Darshana was under the influence of alcohol while driving.

The police have booked her under Sections 279 (Rash driving) and 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC. The police said Balaji managed to survive with injuries as he was wearing a helmet.
