Sources said the accused, identified as Rajasekar (24), a resident of Virudhagiri Kuppam near Vriddachalam, followed Ramya, a teacher working in Sri Gayathri Matriculation School in Kurinjipadi, for over a year.

The incident happened when the victim came to the school around 8.30 am on Friday. Rajasekar, who again trailed her, suddenly took out a knife that he had concealed and slit Ramya’s throat. Having suffered a severe cut injury, she fell down unconscious. The accused then fled the crime spot.

Although Ramya’s colleagues rushed her to the hospital, she died due to heavy loss of blood. In the aftermath of the incident, the management declared a holiday for the school students.

On receiving information, Neyveli ADSP Saravanan and Kurinjipadi police rushed to the spot and held inquiries. They sent the body to the Kurinjipadi Government Hospital for post-mortem.

The police, who have registered a case, have launched a manhunt for Rajasekar. Preliminary investigation revealed that Rajasekar had proposed to Ramya but was spurned. When the cops questioned Ramya’s father Subramanian, he informed them that the youth along with his family came to his house some time back and expressed desire to marry her.

“The proposal was rejected by Ramya’s family. Even after that episode, he used to follow the victim and forced her to marry him. However, she refused to accept his proposal,” police said.

Flower vendor killed for rebuffing advances
Police on Thursday arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly murdering a flower vendor, who thrashed him with slippers when he attempted to misbehave with her a month ago, in Nagapattinam.
The accused, identified as K Ganesh Kumar, was an history-sheeter against whom several cases, including three murder cases, were pending in police stations across the district.
Sources said the flower vendor, identified as A Saranya (28), had beaten Kumar with her slippers in a crowded place on January 9, when the latter attempted to misbehave with her. Saranya’s husband S Anandavelan and her relatives then assaulted him for his behaviour. Feeling slighted, Kumar hatched a plan to take revenge on her.
On Wednesday night, he picked up a quarrel with Saranya when her husband, an auto driver, was away. The accused, who came in an inebriated condition, stopped Saranya when she was walking outside her house in South Poigainallur and fatally attacked her with a lethal weapon. He then fled the spot. A few members of the public, who witnessed the crime, chased him but in vain.
The Velankanni police, who registered a case, on Thursday arrested Kumar from his hideout. The accused was produced before the court and later lodged in the Tiruchy Central Prison. Meanwhile, the Nagapattinam district police have planned to detain Kumar under the Goondas Act for his notorious activities.
