CM launches Rs 2,000 scheme for BPL families
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday launched the much anticipated and ambitious scheme of distributing Rs 2,000 to the labourers of unorganised sector in the Below Poverty Line (BPL).

The scheme, which will be implemented through Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and Municipal Administration and Water Supplies departments, will provide Rs 2,000 per family of BPL labourers. As mark of commencement of the scheme, Palaniswami distributed Rs 2,000 to 32 labourer families in the function held at the Secretariat. After launching the scheme, Palaniswami said, “Gaja cyclone, which ravaged several districts and the drought in the state have caused a deep impact on the livelihood of the several labourers. To lift the BPL families the announcement of providing Rs 2,000 was made in the Assembly on February 11, this year, under Section 110 and as announced the scheme was launched.”
The scheme will cover labourers of various sectors such as farming, crackers, fishing, handloom, construction, washing, climbing trees, salt pans, pottery and urban works. The scheme will benefit 60 lakh families, including the 35 lakh rural families, said Palaniswami.
According to the announcement, cash would be deposited in the banks and Palaniswami distributed the orders for depositing the cash in their accounts.
Free food for construction workers in Amma canteens
Palaniswami also launched the scheme of providing free food for construction labourers in Amma canteens from Monday.
According to the scheme, construction labourers who are members of Tamil Nadu Construction Labourers Welfare Board can avail free food in all the Amma canteens, in Greater Chennai Corporation by showing their ID cards. The scheme was launched by Palaniswami at the Amma canteen in Santhome. Palaniswami said, “The scheme of providing free food in Amma canteens will be beneficial to 43,631 construction labourers registered with the Tamil Nadu Construction Labourers Welfare Board.” He also said that the benefit can be availed in 400 Amma canteens across the city, except those inside the Government Hospitals.
Kit for mothers, children well-being
Palaniswami also launched the scheme of distributing Amma Mother Child Wellness Kit at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Egmore, on Monday. The kit worth Rs 4,000 will have iron tablets for women and health tonics for new born. The scheme is implemented under Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme.
