According to police, the Chennai control room received a call from an anonymous person of having planted bombs in the Salem Collector office. The caller threatened that bombs will go off shortly and snapped the call.

The Chennai police then informed the Salem police on the bomb threat. Following this, a police team led by Salem Town Assistant Commissioner Eswaran and Inspector Saravanan along with the bomb squad sleuths carried out an intensive search, but could not find bombs anywhere in the premises.

Sniffer dog Robin was also pressed into work and metal detectors were used to check. Not to take chances the bomb squad personnel searched all department offices in the four-storey building, garbage bins and bushes in the collectorate premises.

While emptying a garbage bin, police found a yellow bag triggering panic, but it then had just disposed paper cut into pieces. After over two hours’ search, the bomb squad sleuths declared the call to be a hoax.

The police have registered a case and investigations are on to track the caller.
