According to Guru’s sister Meenakshi, the family had decided to observe Guru’s birth anniversary on February 1. However, to prevent them from paying floral respect to the late leader, prohibitory orders were put in place, she alleged. Then, she added, cases were charged against all the family members alleging that they violated the orders and carried knives to attack.
“Following this, a petition was sent seeking to take suo motu action to suspend me from the government hospital where I am working as a nurse,” Meenakshi alleged.
Charging that her sister and their aged mother were assaulted, Meenakshi said they now feared for the safety of Guru’s son Kanalarasan, and sought protection.
Speaking to the media, Kanalarasan charged the PMK leadership of betraying not just the family but the whole Vanniar community who had placed their trust on them. “Because of them, the community and the family have suffered. Now we formed an outfit for the welfare of the community to ensure that no one else should suffer like our family,” Kanalarasan said, adding that their demand included bringing the Sangam’s assets under a trust. Guru’s elderly mother who also addressed the emotionally-charged press conference said the family members were assaulted for speaking out.
