Rs 50 lakh seized in Tiruvarur, car occupants fail to show papers
With the model code of conduct kicking-in after the election dates were announced, a special team of police seized Rs 50 lakh in cash, which was being transported without proper documents in Tiruvarur on Monday.

According to sources, the district administration had formed 12 teams each of flying and static squads, besides four video surveillance teams to prevent poll code violations. It had also set up 24 checkposts to monitor the vehicles.
On Monday morning, the police personnel at the Kanur checkpost on Tiruvarur-Mayiladuthurai Road stopped a car with three occupants on suspicion and examined it. They found a bag with Rs 50 lakh in cash inside it.
Upon being questioned, the car occupants reportedly told the police personnel that the money was intended to be paid to a bus body manufacturing unit in Tiruchy. However, they could not produce any documents to support their claim.
Subsequently, the money was seized and handed over to the nodal officer. “Claimants can get back the money after submitting relevant documents to the nodal officer,” said Tiruvarur RDO Murugadas.
District collector T Anand, said the public could inform any poll code violations to the election control room (04366-226120, 226121, 226123). The voters could also verify their name on the electoral rolls by contacting the toll-free number (1950), the collector added.
Meanwhile, District Superintendent of Police M Durai told newspersons that as many as 78 history-sheeters were arrested in a preventive measure ahead of the polls, adding that the district police along with the special teams were on a strict vigil.
Rs 10 lakh confiscated in Tirupur
The election commission’s flying squad seized Rs 10 lakh during a vehicle check in Tirupur district on Monday.
Acting on suspicion, officials intercepted a car on the Palladam-Pollachi Road and examined it. They found Rs 10 lakh in the car, which was driven by Loganathan from Pollachi.
Upon being questioned, Loganathan claimed that the money was for the medical expenses of his wife. The officials, however, seized the money as he did not furnish proper documents. The cash and his car were then handed over to revenue officials.
With the model code of conduct in place, officials have advised people to carry cash with proper documents to avoid a seizure.
