Bankers to report transactions of Rs 10 lakh and above

In a move to curb the cash for vote practice in Chennai, the district election officer and Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash, on Wednesday, directed banks in the city to send a report on transactions of cash amount of Rs 10 lakh and above.

The Commissioner G Prakash presided over the meeting with the representatives of private and nationalized banks at the Ripon Buildings.


“As per the model code of conduct, we have to monitor the transactions involving Rs 10 lakh and above within the Chennai district. During the meeting, we have asked the bankers to send daily reports on the transactions of Rs 10 lakh and above,” G Prakash said after the meeting. He also added that the bankers should also send the details on a daily basis to the Income Tax department.


Meanwhile, the district comprises of three parliamentary constituencies (North Chennai, Central Chennai and South Chennai) and has 3,754 polling booths, of which 532 are identified as vulnerable.


As many as 48 flying squad teams (FST) and 48 static surveillance teams (SST) have been formed to check the violation of model code of conduct and cash for votes. The Chennai Corporation election officials have also repainted as many as 4,745 walls in the city where political parties made wall painting advertisements. “Of the total 4,745, at least 2,722 wall paintings are on the walls belonging to the government buildings,” an official said.


Adding to this, the district election office has sent a report to the Election Commission of India (ECI) stating North Chennai constituency as expenditure sensitive and sought additional observers and micro-observers.


“We have experience of higher ‘money flow’ during the by-elections in RK Nagar assembly constituency. So, we sent the report. However, additional flying squad teams and staticsurveillance teams will be deployed only after the ECI accepts our report,” the official added.
