From Thanthi to Rahul, Modi tweets to all, urges citizens to vote

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tagged Daily Thanthi and other vernacular dailies on Wednesday, as he went on a Twitterstorm and appealed to the biggest names across all walks of life, including his biggest and fiercest rivals, to encourage Indian citizens to vote in the upcoming elections.

The tweet goes: “Dear @mathrubhumieng, @dinathanthi and Eenadu, You have worked to give voice to people’s aspirations. Increased voter awareness is key to a strong democracy.


I appeal to you to motivate people to vote in large numbers.”


In a matter of an hour, Modi tweeted 29 times and tagged Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Mayawati, Stalin, film stars, sportspersons, businessmen among many others. He requested them to strengthen these efforts “across the length and breadth of India”.


The messages, all posted on Prime Minster Narendra Modi’s offical account @narendramodi, were personalised.


India will hold elections to the seventeenth Lok Sabha in seven phases between April 11 and May 19. Votes will be counted on May 23.
