But, former TNCC president Su Thirunavukkarasar who had sensed this mood of the electorate has decided to shift his residence to the ‘Rock City’ to escape the ‘outsider’ tag.
Sources said Thirunavukkarasar, a native of Aranthangi in neighbouring Pudukkottai district, has been eyeing the Tiruchy LS seat. However, he faces a backlash from the local Congress cadre, who point out that the former Union Minister (during his BJP stint) is an ‘outsider’.
Making their stand clear, a section of local party workers had also sent a representation to the AICC leadership recommending that A Joseph Louis, son of late Tiruchy MP L Adaikalaraj, be fielded instead of Thirunavukkarasar.
However, Thirunavukkarasar is said to have got the blessings of AICC president Rahul Gandhi. Coupled with his immense experience in politics, there is an expectation that Thirunavukkarasar might be the popular choice of the party for Tiruchy seat.
Meanwhile, sources said the Aranthangi strongman, who is determined to shed his ‘outsider’ tag, has reportedly asked his supporters to find a house for him in the city. Some of the location on hunt are KK Nagar, Annamalai Nagar and Karumandapam. “We would be finalising the house before Thirunavukkarasar files his nomination papers,” claimed a Congress worker.
