Though the baby was unhurt, sources said she is under observation at the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital. They added the mother, 30-year-old Saranya, was still in shock over the incident.
Police said Saranya, a resident of Tharadapattu village near Tirukoilur in Villupuram district, had boarded the Bengaluru-bound bus from Tirukoilur on Sunday night. Saranya and her baby had a window seat, they added.
The incident occurred around 10 pm on Sunday when the bus entered Chengam taluk in Tiruvannamalai district. The sleeping infant slid out of the window and fell onto the road when the bus was negotiating barricades placed on the road.
The driver stopped the bus as soon as he heard the mother’s screams, and the other passengers rushed out of the bus to pick up the infant. The nine-month-old, fortunately, did not suffer any injuries as she fell on a mound of sand that had been kept on the roadside.
Saranya and her baby were rushed to the Chengam Government Hospital in an ambulance from where they were referred to Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital and checked for internal injuries.
